Yitagessu received his LL.B from Bahir Dar University and his LL.M in business law from Addis Ababa University. He started his legal practice as a public prosecutor. He then joined Emergency Relief Transport Enterprise as an Insurance Lawyer. In addition to providing legal services on business law matters, Yitagessu also facilitates administrative, taxation, and licensing processes at Ethiopian Investment Commission, Ministry of Revenue, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Land Administration and other relevant government offices.
